Baxter Green Architects were commissioned for the planning and construction of two residential properties as a replacement and infill to a site near Shearwater, Wiltshire. Phasing of the built projects with one plot now completed.
Location
Crockerton, Warminster, Wiltshire
The Work
- Replacement dwelling outside the village settlement boundary.
- Contemporary 4000sqft property on a sloping site within the Cranbourne Chase AONB
- Large areas of glazing complying with current Building Regulations with high thermal building envelope.
Retaining the existing access and the mature trees to the southern boundary also creates an interesting setting and has enabled the plot to be maximised in terms of the landscape and orientation. The stepped elevations and floor plan allows for a change in materials from vertical timber recessed cladding to zinc standing seam cladding creating a collaborative vertical appearance.
The timber cladding is proposed to be left untreated and will therefore weather to a silver colour of varying shades depending upon the elevation. The full height glazing with glazed corners will have sliding timber louvre shutters enabling the elevations to change reflecting the time of day and use of the rooms.
The single storey fully glazed Garden Room creates a dual aspect with access to the upper terrace and full panoramic viewing over the north and west garden while also overlooking the lower terrace. The zinc element is stepped back from the south and east elevations creating a balcony and planted roof over the Garden Room while projecting over the higher flat roof element to create an entrance door canopy.
The dwelling achieved passive house credentials incorporating high thermal levels including triple glazing with air source heating and MVHR.
